Introduction

Our Second Chance Grant was launched to support shelters and rehomers to provide support for the rehoming of cats and dogs across the UK.

We’re delighted to announce that
Hope Rescue has been awarded £4,700 from our Second Chance Grant Programme 2024! This funding will help them continue their incredible work rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs in need.

At Waggel, we believe in doing more than just providing pet insurance - we’re passionate about supporting rescue organisations and giving animals the second chance they deserve. Through our Second Chance Grant initiative, we provide vital funding to charities making a real difference in animal welfare.

We’re so proud to support Hope Rescue and can’t wait to see the positive impact of this grant on the dogs in their care.

Purpose of the grant

Hope Rescue takes in a quarter of the unclaimed stray dogs in Wales, and a staggering 97% of the dogs that arrive into their care have not been neutered or spayed.

Neutering dogs is incredibly important for their health, behaviour, and overall well-being. It reduces the risk of serious health issues like testicular cancer in males and uterine infections or mammary tumours in females. Neutered dogs are often calmer and less likely to exhibit aggression, roaming, or marking behaviours. It also plays a crucial role in controlling the pet population, preventing unwanted litters that can contribute to overpopulation and strain on shelters.

With the ongoing increased cost of living, many families are under additional pressure and may struggle to afford neutering and the routine costs associated with keeping dogs healthy, such as vaccinations, worming, and flea treatments. Unfortunately, there are very few schemes that provide subsidies or financial assistance for veterinary treatments like neutering.

Hope Rescue is facing a surge in requests to take in unplanned and unsold litters of puppies, with neutering costs at the shelter amounting to around £53,000 annually. Neutering is the practical solution to unplanned litters, and all adult dogs that Hope Rescue helps are neutered in readiness for adoption.

The funding they secured from the Second Chance Grant comes at an exceptionally busy time for the charity and will have an immediate positive impact, helping to meet the additional costs of neutering.
